This morning after I dropped off my oldest for school, I came home to my other little asking for me to give her “school stuff” to do.
Of course I had nothing together and misplaced her Pre-K learning book I had bought at Costco. I told her I needed her to give mommy time to find something and her response was, “That is gonna take you FOREVER!” Okay so maybe I spend way too much time trying to thing of fun things for her to do to hold her interest but hey at least I try right?
I did not want to just print out papers for her to practice her letters because she gets board really fast and then doesn’t really get enough practice to do anything. Since she is not technically in school I don’t want to push her to sit and learn either. This is why it takes me too long to come up with things. Thank goodness for Pinterest! Let me tell you this site is AMAZING! If I need ideas for just about anything I can head over there and type what I am looking for. I usually find what I am looking for right away which is really nice, especially when you have a semi-impatient child (something we are working on). So since I take forever to come up with things I went there looking for ideas. I found that someone had pinnned a DIY Salt Alphabet Tray and thought it was brilliant. That should help make it fun for her to get through the alphabet and not only help teach her how to write her letters but also to recognize which letter she is drawing.
The blog that was pinned is ThisMummasLife. She made alphabet cards for her son with a salt tray although there was no download for the letters (Darn it!) so I had to make my own. Arabella wanted gold letters of course so that is what she got. After making the letters I needed to find a tray to put the salt in and managed to dig up a tray that came with a crafting kit my older daughter got one year. It was the perfect size for my DIY salt tray! I am sure you could use a tupperware as well and lay the cards on the table instead of standing them up if you wanted as well. Next I had to find the salt in my pantry. I had a big box of Kosher Salt and decided to use that since we hardly ever use it. After putting it in the salt tray and having her make her letters I would go with a finer salt like table salt. I felt the letters Bella made weren’t as clear as the ones in the picture on ThisMummasLife due to the Kosher salt granules being larger then the table salt. I grabbed a wooden skew from my kitchen as well and cut it in half for her drawing stick.
Needless to say this was a big hit with her and the best part is when she was done practicing her letters she got to draw pictures in the salt.
I am including the gold alphabet cards I made as well as a primary color set, and a pastel color set as free printables for you to use on your BriarBeauties or BriarBoys!
